The East Riding of Yorkshire village of North Cave is situated some 19 kilometres west of Hull. Along with its neighbouring villages of South Cave and Everthorpe it held races in the latter part of the 19th century. The inaugural meeting was held on Monday 23rd May 1864 on farmland owned by Mr Blossom on the edge of North Cave. The principal race, for a Hunting Saddle, was won by Princess owned by Mr Stothard. In 1866 Mr Blossom threatened to plough up the fields he owned on which the races were run, so trying to put an end to North Cave races. However, meetings continued annually until Monday 28th May 1888 when the crowd size was seriously depleted. Meetings did continue outside of the rules of racing after this date and well into the start of the 20th century. |
